Oracy

At Stanley Grove, we believe that spoken language is at the heart of learning. Developing strong oracy skills enables children to express their ideas clearly, listen to others respectfully and build confidence when communicating in a range of situations.

We provide regular opportunities for pupils to talk, present, question and discuss across the curriculum. Through structured talk activities, partner discussions, debate and collaborative learning, children learn how to articulate their thinking and build on the ideas of others.

Our approach to oracy supports pupils to develop:

  • Confidence in speaking to different audiences

  • Active listening skills

  • Clear reasoning and explanation of ideas

  • Respectful discussion and debate

  • Vocabulary development across all subjects

Teachers carefully plan opportunities for talk within lessons so that pupils can rehearse ideas verbally before writing, deepen their understanding and strengthen their communication skills.

We also provide wider opportunities for pupils to develop their speaking and listening skills through assemblies, performances, pupil leadership roles, presentations and collaborative projects.

Oracy is explicitly planned and taught and oracy displays across school enable the 4 areas of oracy to be progressively taught and practised.  By prioritising oracy, we help our pupils to become confident communicators who are prepared for future learning and life beyond Stanley Grove.
