English

At Stanley Grove, we believe that strong literacy skills are at the heart of every child’s development as a confident and successful learner. These skills are taught explicitly and reinforced across the wider curriculum. We give children frequent opportunities to practise and apply skills in a range of meaningful contexts. Carefully chosen core texts underpin the teaching of reading and provide rich inspiration for writing, helping pupils to develop both their understanding and their love of language.

Oracy

At Stanley Grove, we place great emphasis on speaking and listening. Right from the start, pupils are supported to express ideas clearly, listen actively and participate confidently in discussions. Oracy is woven throughout the curriculum, helping children build the communication skills and vocabulary they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Reading

At Stanley Grove Academy, reading is at the heart of learning. Children begin with the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. As they progress, whole-class reading lessons develop fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. We also foster a love of reading through classroom libraries, DEAR sessions, book talks, outdoor reading spaces and special events. Writing

At Stanley Grove, we lay strong foundations in writing from the very start. Handwriting is explicitly taught through letter families, helping pupils develop neat, fluent and legible writing. These skills are practised across the curriculum, allowing children to write with confidence and focus on expressing their ideas. Grammar is carefully woven into writing sessions and also taught in discrete lessons, ensuring children understand how to construct accurate and effective sentences. As pupils progress, they are introduced to composition, learning to plan, draft, and edit their own work once they are ready. We provide opportunities to write for a wide range of purposes and audiences, helping children develop creativity in their writing. By the time they leave Stanley Grove, pupils are confident, capable writers ready to communicate effectively in any context.
