Mathematics

Mathematics at Stanley Grove Academy

At Stanley Grove Academy, we believe that mathematics equips children with essential life skills and the confidence to tackle challenges. Our curriculum is carefully designed to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, enabling pupils to apply their skills in a wide range of contexts and to communicate their mathematical thinking with clarity and precision.

A Mastery Approach for All

We follow a mastery approach to mathematics, where all children learn together and are supported to achieve a deep and secure understanding of key concepts. Learning is broken down into small, carefully sequenced steps so that pupils build knowledge cumulatively and confidently.

This approach is particularly important for our most vulnerable mathematicians. Through high-quality modelling, targeted questioning, scaffolded support and same-day intervention, we ensure that no child is left behind. Additional representations, practical resources and structured guidance enable pupils to keep up with their peers and develop confidence alongside competence.

“I Do, We Do, You Do”

Our teaching follows the “I do, We do, You do” structure:

  • I do – The teacher explicitly models new learning, demonstrating strategies and mathematical language.

  • We do – Pupils practise together with guided support, discussing and refining their understanding.

  • You do – Children apply their learning independently, demonstrating fluency and reasoning with growing confidence.

This gradual release of responsibility ensures that pupils are secure before moving on and are well prepared to apply their skills independently.

Daily Practice and Mathematical Thinking

Daily mental practice supports pupils to secure key number facts and develop automaticity. Accurate mathematical vocabulary is explicitly taught and consistently used, enabling children to articulate their reasoning clearly.

Problem-solving and reasoning are embedded. Pupils are encouraged to persevere, think logically, make connections and justify their ideas.

Mathematics in the Real World

Mathematics is brought to life through practical and real-world contexts. Pupils use maths outdoors to explore shape, coordinates, perimeter, area, measurement and data. They apply their skills across the curriculum, including science, history, geography and computing. These rich opportunities help children understand the purpose of mathematics and recognise its relevance beyond the classroom.

Our aim is for every child to leave Stanley Grove Academy as a confident mathematician who can apply mathematical skills independently and successfully in everyday life.

Diamond Dash

Diamond Dash is our progressive times tables challenge. The levels are not year-specific; pupils move through them at their own pace and only advance when they can answer all questions correctly within the set time. This ensures fluency, accuracy and pride in achievement.
