Geography

At Stanley Grove Academy we believe that geography helps children to understand the world, their place within it and how people and environments are connected. Across school, pupils explore their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world, developing a strong sense of place and curiosity about different landscapes, countries and cultures.

Our geography curriculum builds knowledge progressively from learning about Stanley and Wakefield, to studying rivers, mountains, volcanoes, climate zones, natural disasters and global trade as children move through school. Pupils develop key geographical skills such as map reading, fieldwork, data handling and using atlases and digital maps to investigate the world around them.

Through practical learning, local studies, comparisons of contrasting locations and real-life geographical enquiry, we encourage children to ask questions, think critically and understand how human and physical geography shape our planet. We also take part each year in the Accomplish Geography Bee, celebrating pupils’ geographical knowledge across KS1 and KS2.

Our aim is for every child to leave Stanley Grove Academy with strong geographical understanding, confident map skills and a lifelong curiosity about the world.
