At Stanley Grove Academy we believe that learning a foreign language broadens children’s horizons, deepens cultural understanding and builds confidence in communication. Through our French curriculum, pupils learn to listen, speak, read and write in another language while developing an appreciation for French culture and the wider French-speaking world.
Across Key Stage 2, children develop vocabulary and phrases linked to everyday contexts such as greetings, family, hobbies, food, weather, directions and life in French towns and cities. They also build foundational grammatical understanding, including gender, simple sentence structure, opinions and the use of high-frequency verbs. As pupils progress, they learn to apply their language skills with increasing independence through role play, presentations and written tasks.
Cultural understanding is woven throughout the curriculum. Pupils explore French traditions, celebrations, geography, food, daily life and similarities and differences between France and the UK. Children also encounter authentic stories, songs and texts and gain exposure to other languages as part of our commitment to global citizenship.
