Our Curriculum

Our Exceptional Curriculum

We are incredibly proud of our ambitious and carefully designed curriculum, which provides all children with a rich breadth of experiences. It is structured to ensure pupils are both academically successful and personally fulfilled, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and character needed for their future lives.

Our curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced across all key stages. It is underpinned by clearly defined substantive and disciplinary knowledge, with key concepts and vocabulary revisited and built upon over time to support deep learning and long-term retention.

Ambition, Aspiration and Local Identity

Each year, children study a local hero, helping them to develop a strong sense of identity and aspiration. Through these studies, pupils are encouraged to recognise their own potential and strive to achieve great things in their lives.

Reading at the Heart of Learning

Reading is central to our curriculum and a key driver of success.

  • Our phonics outcomes consistently exceed national expectations, with over 90% pass rates and 100% of pupils achieving the Phonics Screening Check in 2025.

  • In Early Years and Year 1, children follow the Read Write Inc. (RWI) systematic phonics programme.

  • Every classroom has a well-stocked book area with high-quality, age-appropriate texts.

  • Teachers read to pupils daily, fostering a love of reading.

  • Recommended texts are displayed in classrooms to encourage reading at home.

  • Each classroom has a loaning library, alongside a central school library, enabling children to take home a reading-for-pleasure book every week.

A Knowledge-Rich and Connected Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to ensure knowledge is meaningfully connected across subjects. Pupils develop both disciplinary understanding (how knowledge is created and applied) and substantive knowledge (key facts and concepts), enabling them to think critically and make links in their learning.

Creative and Specialist Teaching

We place high value on the arts as a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum.

  • Children benefit from high-quality music provision delivered by a specialist music teacher, alongside a wide range of enrichment opportunities and after-school clubs.

  • Pupils in Years 4–6 take part in the Young Voices programme annually.

  • We also employ through the trust, a specialist art teacher, ensuring pupils develop strong artistic skills, creativity and an appreciation of different artistic disciplines through high-quality, sequenced art lessons.

Enterprise and Real-World Learning

Each year group plans and delivers an enterprise project as part of our Christmas fair. Through this, pupils develop key life skills, including teamwork, financial awareness and an understanding of profit and loss, preparing them for future economic participation.

Personal Development and Life Skills

We are committed to developing well-rounded individuals.

  • All pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 are taught first aid, including how to assess danger, make an emergency call and perform CPR.

  • These essential skills ensure children are prepared to respond confidently in real-life situations.

Outdoor Learning and Environment

Our extensive outdoor provision enriches learning and supports wellbeing.

  • A forest area

  • Campfire space

  • Allotment

  • Wildlife area

Children regularly take part in outdoor learning experiences, promoting resilience, curiosity and a connection to the natural world.

Physical Education and Sporting Excellence

Physical education is a key strength of our curriculum.

  • A specialist PE teacher works alongside staff weekly to deliver high-quality lessons and clubs.

  • Pupils participate in a wide range of sports and competitions, both in school and across the Outwood Together Partnership & Accomplish Trust Games.

  • We have achieved the Platinum School Games Mark since 2023, maintaining this prestigious standard through to 2025.

A Broad, Balanced and High-Quality Offer

We are proud of both our strong academic outcomes and the rich, creative experiences we provide. Our curriculum ensures that every child has access to a broad, balanced and ambitious education, enabling them to thrive both now and in the future.
